Putting my passion on the page: the journey to my first book

Over my career I’ve had many titles: chiropractor, kinesiologist, acupuncturist, business owner, but never expected to add ‘author’ to the list.

I was focused on my work developing home healthcare products to alleviate pain and contribute to overall well-being. Yet it was this dedication to improving my patients’ quality of life that led to the opportunity to write my first book, one of the proudest moments of my professional life.

Over the past decade I have noticed an alarming number of increased cases of chronic pain in my patients and society at large – and not just in older demographics. My first products were formulated to help treat this pain, but I wanted to dig deeper into the cause of chronic pain and disease – and all research seemed to point to inflammation.

I began extensive research into natural supplements and their effect on inflammation. In analyzing hundreds of journal articles, turmeric kept coming out on top, and I knew I was on to something.

Turmeric has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years, but it’s less known in the western hemisphere so I went right to the source and connected with PhDs in India to learn more. I also consulted with PhDs from the US, Germany, Italy and Portugal and reviewed an extensive number of in-depth studies on turmeric and its benefits. My approach has always been to dive deep into the science behind any ingredient and as a result I accumulated a wealth of knowledge about the power of turmeric.

Turmeric’s effectiveness as an anti-inflammatory lies in its powerful antioxidant properties. On a scientific level, it attacks the inflammatory chemicals and free radicals responsible for inflammation and has been shown to protect the nervous system, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, liver, kidneys and musculoskeletal system from damage. Studies have illustrated positive impacts on all manner of diseases including cancer, heart disease, arthritis, and all types of inflammatory conditions.

My intention was always to develop a supplement that provided all of these benefits, but as I continued my research I was surprised to find out that most health professionals knew very little about turmeric. If they didn’t have the information on this powerful herb, how could they recommend it to patients who could benefit greatly?

I knew I wanted to share my findings with my colleagues, but felt it was important to keep things accessible to the average person as well. That’s why I chose to write a book outlining everything I’d learned, distilling down the hundreds of studies and hours of research. Since the book’s release, a number of colleagues have reached out to thank me for writing such an in depth yet easily understood summary of the power of turmeric.

As unexpected as the opportunity was, and despite the additional hard work, I knew immediately that it was the right thing to pursue. My passion has always been helping people live healthier and more comfortable lives, and sharing “The Power of Turmeric” is another chance to do just that. And it’s definitely a point of pride to see the book on my office bookshelf.
